Protaras – Fig Tree Bay – Cyprus
Protaras, also called Fig Tree Bay by some people is a tourist area on Cyprus’ east coast about 12 kilometres north-east of Agia Napa. The area keeps growing, new hotels and restaurants pop up every year.
There are about 500 people living year round in the area, in the summer Protaras is a paradise for those who are looking for great beaches and water sports. For the locals Protaras is the number one holiday destination on the island, many people have their summer houses here and travel down to the area on the weekends.
In Protaras the sunbathers find their paradise, as many of the island’s best beaches are here. The nightlife in Protaras is slightly less hectic than that of Agia Napa and the many families choose to take their holiday here. Protaras consists largely of only two roads. The upper main road and the lower street, which is lined with restaurants, pubs and shops. The side walks are wide and there are many crossing points.
Here you will find everything you need for a lovely holiday in the sun. In Protaras it is walking distance to everything so you do not really think about transportation. You pop down to the supermarket and buy your fresh bread in the morning. In the evening you buy with you a bottle of wine which you enjoy on the balcony watching the sunset.
The beaches in Protaras are like little pearls dotted along the coastline, you can try a new beach every day if desire.
In Protaras you will also find well-stocked souvenir shops, shoe and clothing stores, pharmacies, opticians, post office, a couple of night clubs and plenty of pubs. Since Protaras is a tourist area the shops do not close for siesta. Most shops are open between the hours of 8.00 to 23.00 except Sundays when many close earlier in the day.
If you are looking for total relaxation and peace and quiet, travel to Protaras in April, May, late September or October. During the peak summer season June, July, August the centre of Protaras is full of action and people don’t go to bed before midnight.
Pernera
The area of Pernera belongs to Protaras but is about 2 kilometres from Protaras centre.
The area is full of hotels, houses and restaurants, so you never notice that you are in another area. The local bus pass by the area on it’s way to Paralimni. The area is conveniently within walking distance to shops and restaurants.
In Pernera you will find many good restaurants and pubs, but no nightclubs. And you are always close to the sea. If you like to go to the centre of Protaras, you can take a short cut along the sea front promenade. The promenade begins near the Blue Spice Restaurant and Marlita Hotel, a 20-minute walk takes you to the centre of Protaras. Along the promenade you will find cosy picnic spots and cafés serving waffles and ice cream. The promenade is illuminated at night.
