Nicosia – capital of Cyprus

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus not only offers great shopping , you will also find plenty of culture and history here. Nicosia lies roughly in the middle of the island and has a long history dating back to the Bronze Age. Today Nicosia is a town with an intermingled historical heritage with the modern city’s pulse.

The town centre consists of the old quarter surrounded by a Venetian wall of sandstone with a moat and heart-shaped bastions. Here in the old quarter you will find narrow streets with interesting architecture, the beautifully restored pedestrian streets with its craft shops, cafés and taverns. Mosques and palm trees give the old town an oriental atmosphere.

A visit to the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia is recommended.

There are plenty of art galleries in town and in the old town can see a permanent exhibition at the Famagusta Gate, one of the three original gates of the old town which is now used as cultural centres.

The shopping in Nicosia is said to be one of the best and on the street Archiepiskopou Makariou III Avenue you’ll find the big chains. If you are looking for branded products, take the parallel street Stasikratous Street that offers many exclusive brands, MaxMara, Fendi and Karen Millen to name a few.

Nicosia is a lovely city to visit  all year round, in the summer the mercury hovers around +40 but the evenings in Nicosia are cool and pleasant.

Nicosia is the last divided city in the world due to the Turkish invasion in 1974, but it is perfectly safe to cross the border at Ledra Street and stroll around in northern Nicosia.
